Chinatown Heritage Centre

I have always wanted to visit Chinatown Heritage Centre as those old shop houses kind of reminded me of my childhood life staying with Yeye and Mama. Some parts of the museum did resembled our shop house at Batu Pahat which brought back lots of nostalgic memories to me.

I brought Papa along to check out CHC and we enjoyed learning how Chinese migrants' lives were in the past. Once you have bought your admission ticket, you would be provided a multimedia guide to tour you around the museum.

The start of the tour was on first floor where the Tailor's shop was located. I remembered Mama also had this Singer brand sewing machine. Those black round light switches were exactly the same too.

Moving on to the backyard and I looked up to the second floor. I was totally being transported back in time to Yeye and Mama's shop house!

Next were the tailor's family bedrooms. One could not imagine the living condition during the early 50s to 60s. All family members were being squeezed to sleep in a rather small room.

The typical cooking area often comes with toilet next to each other. I remembered Mama used to have a similar wooden cupboard for storing of kitchen utensils. Ohh...and the mouse trap was so familiar.

The second floor was shared among a few families including the common space for kitchen and washroom. One had to take turns waiting for each other.

You could tell that the Samsui women stayed here too. Do spot out their blue uniforms, red hat, and wooden clogs. This is the standard clothing which they wear to work as a labourer in the early days. Most of the buildings in Singapore were built by the Samsui women.

At the end of the tour, I came across a roadside library, barber stop, and mini cinema. One could also engage a writer to send letters back to their relatives and families back in China.
