Farmer's Market : Yokohama Marche

I had recently spotted an interesting activity from Spurbox and wanted to give Ethan as a surprise. Turned out the entire session was kind of fun. 

Do note that your children have to wash their hands clean before the start of any activity.

First activity we went to was making of sushi swiss roll. We were told to re-arrange a piece of swiss roll cake to make it into a sushi. Really cool.

After Ethan cut the swiss roll cake into pieces, he squeezed some whipped cream on top of it. He then sprinkled some shredded coconut to replace rice grains on the sushi.

Next, Ethan rolled a piece of black colour fondant to replace the seaweed. In case you do not know what a fondant is, it is actually kind of like a marshmallow. 

The fish roes were replaced by sagos. The tamago (egg) and ebi (prawn) were replaced with yellow and orange colours fondant. How creative it is, isn't it?

Second activity was decorating of ramen cupcakes. 

All Ethan had to do was to decorate two chocolate cupcakes with yellow whipped cream. The brown, white, pink, and yellow fondant were turned into meat, egg and fish cake. Ethan was given a plain pocky stick as a substitute for chopsticks.

The last activity was making of fish soap but must be with the help of parents. While Ethan decorated some paints on the fish mould, I poured in the hot melting soap. Once all cooled down, we packed up the lovely soaps home.

Once we had completed all three activities, we were given ten tokens which could be redeemed for either desserts or games.

We gobbled up all of the sushis, cupcakes and treats won from the games. Even if we did not win any prizes, at the end of the day it was about having fun.

Spurbox Joy Box - Do It Yourself Arts and Crafts

I didn't know that Spurbox has shifted to a new location. They used to be at POMO, Dhoby Ghaut. I brought Ethan to attend a baking-storytelling-artsncrafts class during March holidays, and he enjoyed it a lot.

Spurbox has this Joy Box craft box where it gets delivered directly to your home / office. Each box comes with eight types of arts and crafts. There are different themes as well suitable for boys and girls from two to ten years old. You may try out the trial box first and decide if you would like to go for the six months subscription.

I bought a trial box for Ethan which has a bugs / insects theme. We loved it as the arts and crafts are so simple to make. Most of the materials are packed together without us having to buy any additional items.

Bee

We tried painting the bee's body with black paint to make the stripes. But because of the material of this yellow coated paper plate, we were unable to colour even when using a marker. Our last resort was to paste two white papers on to the body, then colour it with black marker. 

Sometimes, we just need to tweak a little bit with whatever materials we have on hand. Or when things failed in this case. Ethan added a pair of eyebrows for the bee too. 

Lady Bug

What a great way to craft using a disposable plastic spoon. I have never thought of this. We did not have a paint brush so we used a toothbrush. Cool huh?

Paper Plate Snail

I dislike the idea of using glue as it tend to get messy. So all the arts were made using double sided tapes which was still not too bad.

Spider

Thanks to Ethan's poncho or he would have painted all over himself. The paint provided was washable anyway, so it was still okay.

Clothes Peg Dragonfly

We used magic pens instead of paint to colour the clothes peg.

Ants

What a great way to make use of an egg carton.

Butterfly

Look at the yellow butterfly which was folded by Ethan. Both our butterflies were completed using different methods. I love his creativeness.

Clothes Peg Caterpillar

The easiest task of all. Simply apply some glue or stick a tape on the clothes peg. After some touching up on the colourful fur balls, googly eyes..and tata you are done!
