Do check out my Malacca's food edition here. Some of the recommendations are listed on my current post as we just have to visit them every two years.
6th August 2015 - Day One
Our stay at Swiss Hotel Heritage Boutique was a perfect one as it was located at the end of Jonker Walk which means we would not be disturbed by all the noise at night. Parking is free of charge, and I suggest that you do not drive out on weekends to secure your lot. The room was rather small, but it would be the same for other nearby hotels as well.

Most of the shops in Jonker open only during the day, and at night (on weekends). Hence, it was like a dead town on weekdays. We searched around for food all the way to the end of the bridge (Chung Wah Chicken Rice Ball on the left), and turn to the right.
Hubby wanted to have some Chinese food, and we settled our dinner at Baba Freds Nyonya (which was also the same shop for Jonker Street Chicken Rice Ball). Chicken, and vegetables were still acceptable, but rice balls were a tad too dry.

7th August 2015 - Day Two
Breakfast at Low Yong Moh which was less than ten minutes walk away from our hotel. There were already queues forming when we reached around 9am, I think. This coffee shop is popular among the locals, and tourists as they serve different kinds of delectable dim sums.
Our lunch was at QQ Ice aka Jonker 86 (just next to Jonker 88), but the durian chendol's standard has dropped tremendously. My craving was not satisfied.. *cries* By the way, Jonker 88's chendol is overrated.
We checked out Mamee Jonker House whereby you get to learn how these instant noodles were made from scratch. Not to forget buying some Mamee snacks home!
The whole stretch of Jonker's shops were actually selling almost the same souveniers, so just visit one or two will do. Do try out the funny ice-cream like an egg shape, there were several stalls selling it. A tip to try out everything within a day or two was to have little serving of every dish, and you would probably had ten different cuisines at the end of your trip. Note that smoking is prohibited in Jonker.
We then crossed the bridge (Hard Rock Cafe was just next to it) from Jonker Street to The Stadhuys, and towards Dataran Pahlawan Megamall. We enjoyed strolling as we had been eating non-stop since morning.

After some window shopping, we walked to the opposite Mahkota Parade Shopping Mall for the Malacca's famous mille crepe! I almost wanted to order all of the flavours, but frankly speaking, the original flavour is quite jelat. Go for green tea, gula melaka etc.
It was time to go back to Jonker Street for its weekend night market. You could find two stalls selling coconut juice at the beginning of night market right after you passed by the bridge. Go to the stall on the left side as we tried the one on the right (coconut flesh was too thick).
The stall on the right in front of San Shu Gong. |
There was this stall selling fried squid on the right when you moved further down. We bought some smelly beancurd (not as smelly as the one in HK or TW), and sat down at the table next to fried squid stall. Turned out they were both under the same shop.
We tried other delicacies along our way while shopping, and I think Singapore's pasar malam must learn from them. Other countries' night markets are always more happening as they often filled with tons of street foods.
Quail's eggs in takoyaki style. |
Most of the food stalls were located at the end of Jonker Street which was great for us since we could go back to our hotel after dinner. Apart from the local zi char, this scallop topped with vermicelli was the most popular one.

8th August 2015 - Day Three
The third day was more relaxing since we had covered most of Jonker except for its foods. Breakfast at our hotel (they do come with daily breakfast), and the spread was not too bad with traditional Nyonya kuehs.
We headed over to Lung Ann Refreshments for Loi Satay which usually started from 1pm or 2 pm. Its speciality would be intestine's satay.
Located just diagonally opposite of Lung Ann was East & West Rendevous selling all sorts of Nyonya kuehs. We had some chendol to quench our thirst, and its gula melaka was heavenly. *slurps* Do note that the lady boss has quite an attitude if you do not buy anything. Just don't step into the shop if you just intend to see see look look.
We bought some durian puffs (two shops away from Jonker 88) before going back to hotel. Do refrigerate the puffs before eating as the taste differs a lot when you eat them under the hot sun.
Cousin brought us to Portugese Settlement for seafood dinner as we were craving for it whenever we visit to Malacca. There were about ten different stalls, and everyone has own preference, but ours would be no. 1. Do not agree to go to any of the stalls as you might not be able to change your mind later.
Do try out the white pepper crab, and I loved the look-so-spicy but not spicy sambal kangkong. Order some Joes' mango juice if you are a fan for sour drink. The stall is at the far end, and thanks to cousin-in-law for queuing up.
Next, we bought our first round of supper at Jalan Tengkera as cousin recommended this famous putu piring. We were lucky as the person behind us ordered fifty pieces. Phew! This was similar to Singapore's tutu kuih with coconut or peanut's filling. The Malacca's version of coconut mixed with gula melaka was indeed mouth watering.
Second round of supper at Pak Putra for its famous Tandoori chicken & naan. Not to forget the mango lassi drink which we ordered a second glass since we could not get enough of it.

9th August 2015 - Day Four
We had our breakfast at Baba Low, one of the popular Nyonya foods in Malacca. Be prepared to wait if you reach after 9:30am on weekends. Remember to try the gula melaka kuih, I finished almost three of them.
Our trip would not be complete without trying the coconut milkshake. I heard that Klebang's one is the best, so we will try it the next time.
Lunch was at Restoran Seng Kee for yummy Hokkien noodles.
I did not know there was a new shopping mall The Shore that was opened in Malacca. This was the reason why there were not much crowds when we went to Dataran Pahlawan, and Mahkota Parade. It was cousin's first time visiting this mall as well, and we went to Shore Oceanarium (similar to SEA Aquarium).
We were given some quiz to be answered by using chops as we explored along. Some of the stations were quite hidden, we just had to find your way through. Once all questions were answered, we went to collect a small gift (we gotten a key chain) at the main entrance reception.
My boy loved feeding the turtles as well which was the last part of the Oceanarium before we left.
Before we checked in to our second hotel (I wanted to stay there since it's near town), we just had to drop by Bee Bee for the melt in your mouth pineapple tarts.
Finally, we could have some rest before meeting cousin for dinner. Thanks Hotel Equatorial for the warm welcome.
We went to another satay celup this time, and I find that the gravy was too spicy with not enough peanut. Hence, we did not fully enjoy our experience there unlike the previous time at Capitol Satay Celup.
We ended up filling our stomach at Station 1 Cafe near our hotel.

10th August 2015 - Day Five
Last day in Malacca, so we shopped around at Dataran Pahlawan which was just opposite of Equatorial Hotel. Lunch was at my favourite Chinese restaurant - Dragon I. Remember to try the fried carrot cake.
Hubby wanted to visit Crocodile Farm, so we stopped by since the farm was located along the way just before we entered the highway. I was shivering when I took those photographs of the crocodiles in such a close up shot. *faints*
